Fire next to a state arms plant in Brașov: Romania's intelligence service says a sabotage network coordinated from Russia set it

On 14 September 2026 a fire broke out on the Carfil industrial platform in Brașov, next to CARFIL SA, a subsidiary of the state arms group Romarm; it also damaged the offices of several companies. On 26 October 2026 Romania's Intelligence Service (SRI) said it had identified a sabotage network coordinated from the Russian Federation that caused the fire. DIICOT prosecutors are investigating attempted acts of sabotage by three defendants, two Belarusian citizens and a Ukrainian citizen living in EU states, under European arrest warrants issued by the Bucharest Court of Appeal; two are held in Germany and the third was located in Poland.

Established by. Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), 26 Oct 2026: it identified "o rețea de sabotaj coordonată din Federația Rusă" ("a sabotage network coordinated from the Russian Federation") involved in causing the fire of 14 September 2026, and said the network's coordinators had given it targets including state and private weapons production facilities (as reported by Reuters, Știrile ProTV and HotNews). DIICOT, 26 Oct 2026: investigation for attempted acts of sabotage; European arrest warrants issued in absentia.

Latest. On 26 October 2026 a third European arrest warrant was issued for the defendant located in Poland; Romania is seeking the surrender of all three. The two held in Germany were arrested there, according to prosecutors, while preparing similar acts. Russia's embassy in Bucharest could not be reached for comment (Reuters).

Link to the war against Ukraine. The target was Romania's state arms industry; the SRI said the network was also tasked with other military and industrial sites, and that other attempts this year targeted sites used to train Ukrainian forces.
