At about 02:00 on 29 May 2026, during Russian drone strikes on Ukraine across the Danube, a drone hit the roof of a 10-storey apartment block in southern Galați and its payload exploded, setting a top-floor flat on fire. About 70 residents were evacuated; two people were injured and two more were treated for panic attacks. The Ministry of National Defence (MApN) identified the drone as a Russian-provenance Geran-2; two Romanian F-16s scrambled at 01:19 did not engage it.
